Your electrical panel is the heart of your home's electrical system. When it's undersized or aging, it doesn't just inconvenience you — it can be a real safety risk. Here are five signs it's time for an upgrade.
1. Breakers trip constantly
An occasional trip is normal. Breakers that trip every time you run the microwave and the AC together mean your home is asking for more power than the panel can safely deliver.
2. You still have a fuse box
Fuse boxes and older panels (like Federal Pacific or Zinsco) are common in Bergen County's older homes — and many are known fire risks. If you have one, have it evaluated.
3. You're adding big loads
EV chargers, a hot tub, a home addition, or central air can push an older 100A service past its limits. A 200A upgrade adds the headroom modern homes need.
4. Warm panel, buzzing, or burning smell
If you ever notice a burning smell, scorch marks, or buzzing at the panel, stop and call a licensed electrician right away — this is not a DIY situation.
5. Flickering or dimming lights
Lights that dim when appliances kick on often point to an overloaded or failing panel.
